When darkness falls on the trails, elite ultrarunner Daniel Jones is often still out there.
His journey from a burnt-out university runner to one of the top ultra-distance athletes
in the world is a story of resilience, reinvention, and relentless ambition.
And it’s also the perfect reflection of what Fenix stands for: Lighting for extremes.
A Story of Grit & Growth
Daniel’s connection to running began in the coastal town of Whakatāne, New Zealand, where family weekends meant racing with the local Harrier Club and building a fierce competitive spirit. That same drive carried him through high school, into multisport events inspired by his father, who is a Coast-to-Coast champion, and across the world to the US, where he ran for Eastern Kentucky University. But by the time he graduated,
Daniel was burnt out. The joy of running had faded.
A Pivotal Moment
After returning to New Zealand, he rediscovered his passion through multisport, adventure racing,
and eventually trail running. A pivotal moment came when he joined the Wellington Scottish Harrier Club,
took a deep dive into marathon training, and clocked a 2:16:15 personal best. But the path soon took another turn. Inspired by documentaries on the Western States 100 and fuelled by five months of high
altitude training in Kenya, Dan set his sights on ultrarunning.
Since 2022, he’s been all-in. From gritty efforts in China to fourth-place finishes at Western States and CCC,
every time Daniel hits the trails, he proves that he belongs among the sport’s elite. His 2024 season
marked a major milestone: joining the Adidas TERREX global team, travelling the world,
and racing some of the most iconic trails across the planet.
